Call for Conference participation
The Social Work National Conference 2008 theme, Human Rights in a Diverse Community, resonates for all sectors of social work — locally, nationally and internationally.
Human rights are intrinsic in all the work we do in relation to children, women, families and communities; in the pursuit of equality and equity for marginalized and minority groups; and in the struggles for civil rights and basic freedoms, economic well-being, and access to health care and the necessities of life. Issues of human rights are the foundation of our quest for a sustainable environment as well as international and civil peace. Human rights and human dignity, along with social justice, are two of the primary principles underlying social work ethics.
The 2008 Conference theme encompasses all dimensions of social work practice, professional education and research. Abstract submissions are sought that explicitly highlight or explore the barriers individuals, families and communities face as they attempt to access social assistance, health care, employment and more, as well as initiatives that have been developed to address these barriers. This could be within any given practice field, project, study or education at local, national, and/or international levels, which include, but are not restricted to, the following areas:
Categories of presentations
- Direct Practice
- Social Policy
- Community Practice
- Exemplar Community Programs
- Research
- Education and Training
- Prevention
- Advocacy
- Social Planning
- Field Education
Presenters
Any social worker, educator or student in a school of social work, regardless of his or her affiliation with CASW membership organizations or CASSW, can make a presentation at this Conference.
Criteria for assessing abstracts
Abstracts will be assessed and peer-reviewed by the Social Work National Conference 2008 Program Committee, in collaboration with colleagues affiliated with either CASW or CASSW. Confidentiality will be maintained. All decisions of the Program Committee are final.
A maximum of one abstract by any primary author/presenter will be accepted with the exception of multiple presenter proposals.

- Implications for the social work profession or social work education
- Clarity

Language
Presentations may be made in English or French. Presentations will be grouped by theme and format first and then by language. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided for the keynote/plenary speakers. It is assumed that the language of the abstract will be the language of the presentation.
